Question

Hi, I read one answer given about this subject but my question is a bit different.

My lab mix dog ate a few oz's of Pistachios (shells and all) exactly one week ago. My vet said it should be OK but to monitor her for a couple days. Dog was fine, went to the bathroom fine etc. Just on Monday morning she had a small throw up, it was mostly shells, i figured everything was out. Then the next couple days, she hasn't had any throw up, but when she pooped it has been kind of smaller than usual and a couple of the poops had some shells in it.

My question is if since it's a week later and she is pooping if she is probably fine? And that she is pooping, even though it seems smaller at least its coming out and isn't blocked? Thanks,

Answer

I would say that if she is passing shells and is passing anything and her stool is formed, she is most likely fine. Make sure she is eating ok and keep an eye on her stools. It can take over a week to clean her out. It's amazing that things can be in their guts that long but I have seen dogs that had been boarding with us for over a week vomit up whole hot dogs- not one but two of them. And we sure don't give anything hot dogs! Your vet was right that she will be fine.
